The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has recently signed an adhesion treaty to the Madrid Protocol that will enter into force on January 12th, 2021. As of this date, trademark owners can designate Trinidad & Tobago through an International Trademark Registration as an alternative protection route.
While there is still some uncertainty about how International Trademark Registrations will be handled, we believe this to be part of a trend started by the recent entry into force of the Trade Marks Act towards increased flexibility and leniency from the traditionally rigorous local practice.
